Discovering hidden health risks at the right time – Jane’s story
30 Sep 2026
Having not seen a health professional for more than 20 years, Jane decided it was time to get a clearer picture of her health. Although she had remained fairly active since retiring, she was aware that her weight had gradually increased and wanted support to make healthier changes. What began as a routine check ultimately identified important health risks that had previously caused no noticeable symptoms.
“I knew my weight was an issue and that my diet and portion control could be better. I’d remained fairly active, but my weight had gradually crept up and I was finding it difficult to lose. As I hadn’t seen a doctor in such a long time, I realised it was time to have some checks done.”
Norfolk NHS Health Checks give eligible adults an opportunity to take a closer look at their health and better understand their risk of developing certain long-term conditions. The check considers key areas of cardiovascular health and provides personalised advice, helping people identify potential concerns and take informed steps to protect their future wellbeing.
“I expected to be told that I was overweight, but I wasn’t sure what else the NHS Health Check would find. I was extremely surprised to discover that my blood pressure was 232/129 and my cholesterol was raised. Neither had caused me any symptoms, so I had no idea there was an issue.”
“Understandably, I felt very anxious and worried about the results, but I was also extremely glad they had been discovered. I was advised to see my GP the same day for an immediate blood pressure check and treatment. If I hadn’t signed up for the NHS Health Check, these issues might have remained undetected.”
“Following my NHS Health Check, I’ve set myself some clear goals. I want to get support with my weight, reduce the amount of saturated fat I eat, cut salt from my diet and continue keeping active. I’m going to stick to the advice I’ve been given and focus on setting small, manageable goals.”
“My advice to anyone who might be reluctant to have an NHS Health Check is to go. If it wasn’t for attending the NHS Health Check, I would never have known my blood pressure was an issue. Finding out has given me the opportunity to get treatment and make changes to look after my health.”
“Overall, I’m extremely glad I made the decision to attend. My NHS Health Check identified problems I didn’t know were there and has given me the opportunity to take action and make positive changes for my future health.”
