Journey to better health- Mike's story
22 Oct 2024
Mike worked in a manual job at Great Yarmouth Borough Council. He was one of the first Council staff to have their Health Check at Great Yarmouth Town Hall when the team visited. He bumped into his practitioner Kirsty recently and told her how having an NHS Health Check has changed his life for the better.
“I can’t express my gratitude to Kirsty enough, I was oblivious to the fact that my cholesterol level was high. I was very active in my job, I climbed scaffolding, taught others how to safely use fall arrest equipment and carried a lot of heavy equipment, so the results from my NHS Health Check shocked me. I had a follow up and blood tests with my GP and we agreed to attempt to correct it with diet only.
The NHS Health Check is available to people aged 40 -74 with no pre-existing conditions who are registered with a Norfolk GP or live in Norfolk and be registered with a GP surgery elsewhere. It is a free 20–30-minute check-up of your overall health carried out by one of our Health Check Practitioners.
“I have a few known health problems (Osteoarthritis and Gout) and I assumed that feeling generally unwell was linked to those. I had little energy and being overweight (200 pounds and 38” waist) I couldn’t get my socks on without gasping for breath.
The NHS Health Check can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. This is done through some simple questions, measurements and tests performed to work out your risk score.
“Today I am in much better health, a lot more alert and I have a lot more energy. I have lost 2.5 stone and I can do things that I wasn't able to do before - like put my socks on. Through regular monitoring and making small but significant changes, my cholesterol is now within a healthier range.”
